Music Magazine Evaluation

1.In what ways does your media product use, Develop or challenge forms and conventions in real Media products?
1Title of my Magazine-
For the Masthead of my Magazine I used the font “Day Poster B”as I found that this font stood out the most as it was big and bold and clear to see and read. I Decided to call my Magazine “Beats” I did this because beats is a musical word and is used a lot when people talk about music, I decided this would be a good word to use as my magazine title as it would make it clear to the audience that my magazine is in the music genre. I used the colour grey for my Masthead as this is one of the colours that the subject in my main image is wearing and I found that this colour went well with the bright yellow background of the front cover of my magazine which contributed to make it stand out. I Decided to make my Masthead stand out even more by making it look 3D I did this by writing beats twice and making the one on top a darker grey than the one underneath , I thought this made the title look more professional and unique
This is the Masthead of my magazine.

This is the Masthead of a well known pop magazine called smash hits.

My Masthead is slightly to that of smash hits as both are mounted to make it stand out more although my Masthead is quite unique as not many other magazines have made their Mastheads 3D most have emulated smash hits magazines idea and mounted their masthead to add a border.

2The Mis-en-Scene of images
I think the Mis-en –Scene of my images follows the regular codes and conventions of magazines. This is because I changed the settings in all of my images to add variety The settings I used were a bright yellow background, a room featuring a piano and a room with a keyboard painted on the wall, all of these backgrounds link to pop music and help make the genre of my magazine clear. I tried to keep all of the backgrounds in my images clear as I wanted the subject of my images to be the main focal point without anything taking the attention away. To keep it simple I also tried to stick to only a few colours in each background. On my cover to make it unique I placed an almost transparent image of the model featured on the cover, this gave my magazine its own unique style.

3Costumes and Props
For my images that I have used to feature in my magazine I didn’t ask my model to wear any special clothing or costumes as I wanted to keep my magazine as casual as possible. For my images I used a few props this was to try and make my magazine link more to music, the props I used were a set of bright pink headphones, a piano and also a wall which had a keyboard painted onto it. I used the Pink headphones for my front cover this is because the front cover is bright yellow and this colour went well with the shade of pink that the headphones were. We decided to use a piano as pianos link well to pop music as pop musicians tend to use pianos fairly often. Again I was attempting continuity between the colours and house style.
4people
On my magazine images that I have used to feature in my magazine, I decided to use one model as I wanted to keep my magazine simple. I chose this model because she looks as though she is a pop musician with the clothes that she is wearing and the poses that she did. Another reason I used this model is because she is around the same age as my target audience so using her to feature on my magazine might help to gain more attention from potential buyers of my magazine. Also using someone around the same age as the target audience may help them to relate to my magazine and may capture their attention.
5Title Font and Style
On the cover of my magazine I used more than one font this is because I wanted it to be suitable for teenagers and I wanted it to have its own unique style. The fonts I have used throughout my magazine are consistent, For the main titles for each page I used the font ‘Day Poster B’ because this font was bold and clear to see and read, For the sell lines and all other pieces of writing that features in my magazine I used the font ‘Forque’ as it is clear and looks fun to look at which will suit my target audience. The colours I used for my main titles is grey. This is the darkest colour I have used on my magazine which is why I used it for my main titles as it stands out more. For my sell lines and other pieces of writing I used pink and a little bit of white because these colours work well together and also look eye catching when placed on the page next to each other. The main piece of writing for my double page spread is purple as this is the colour that fits with the colours in the image for my double page spread.
6Written Content
The written content of my magazine follows the codes and conventions of a normal music magazine as it asks Katie about her personal life , her tours and albums and also what’s happening next in her career. All the questions cover topics that would be discussed in real music magazines when interviewing a pop musician. The questions I asked were frequently asked questions in a real magazine, this may help to get the attention from the target audience. My research suggested that certain questions were asked of the performer.
7Music Genre and how your magazine suggests it
The Genre of my magazine is pop. I have made this genre clear throughout my magazine because of the props and backgrounds that I used in my images. For example I used pink headphones that suggest links with pop, and a piano these props are heavily linked with pop music which help my genre become more clear. I have also featured a pop singer throughout my magazine and included sell lines to do with pop. The colours used on my magazine can also be linked to pop as I have used Grey, Pink, Yellow and White I decided to use these as most of the pop magazines I researched included these colours. These bright colours are usually associated with pop as apposed to darker colours which may be associated with heavy rock.
8Layout
The Layout of my magazine follows the conventions of a normal music magazine. On the double page spread I have arranged the interview with the pop singer in columns and the image fills the second page this is how all of the double page spreads that I researched were arranged. My front cover also follows convention as I have a main image which fills the page, my masthead that that I placed at the top of the page and sell lines that fit around the image. Although I have made my front cover slightly unique by adding a second image, this image has been placed on top of my main image but I have made it almost transparent so that 2 images can be seen but only if you look closely.
9Contents Page
My contents page also follows conventions as I have an image of the subject who was also on my cover, on the right of the page, and all of the stories that I am including inside my magazine is arranged in clear neat columns so they are easy to find. The image of Katie follows conventions as she is looking out to the audience while posed at a piano. I have also included the page numbers. The title of my page is at the top in bold, for consistency I have used the same font as I used for my masthead on my front cover. I have used the same colours that I used on my front cover to also keep consistency throughout my magazine. Also I decided to add a competition on this page to keep the attention of my target audience.
2: How Does Your Media Product Represent Particular Social Groups

This image I have used of Katie represents young teenage girls as she is posed with headphones which suggest she is listening to music, this represents teenagers as they spend a lot of time listening to music and a lot of young people wear these types of headphones. It is clear that my magazine is aimed at teenage girls as I have decided to use someone who is a teenage girl as my main subject which will help my magazine relate to my target audience, the colours I have used also suggest that this magazine is for girls of a certain age. The competition at the bottom right of my page is also suggest that my magazine is aimed at teenage girls as most young girls like the artist mentioned so the competition may attract more people. The subject I have used is smiling while looking out to the camera this may also attract young teenage girls as she looks fashionable and friendly and someone who my target audience can relate to and idolise. The other images used throughout my magazine represent teenage girls in the same way.

3: What Kind of Media Institution Might Distribute Your Media Product and Why?

I think IPC Media would be best to distribute my Media product, This is because it is a well known distributer and it already distributes big well known magazines. If IPC Media did distribute my media product it would help it to become more known because of its status already

4:Who Would Be The Audience For Your Media Product

The target Audience for my magazine is teenage girls who are around the age of 13-19 I chose for this to be my target audience because during my research I found that girls are more likely to read magazines than boys especially teenagers as they are at an age where they like to read gossip and idolise celebrities.

Typically my target audience will still be in full time education and Music will be a big part of their life whether they are on their way to school, doing homework or spending time to their selves . This is why I made my music magazine a pop magazine as more people are likely to listen to pop than most other genres, I found this out in my research.

5:How Did You Attract/Address Your Audience

I have tried to attract my audience by using feminine colours throughout my magazine and using bright colours which stand out well and make my magazine eye catching. The fonts I used may also attract the audience as these are also feminine.
This is my front cover
This is my contents page.

This is my double page spread.

The images I used attract and address the audience as they are all consistent as I have used the same person in each. The person in my images is the same sort of age as my target audience and she looks like a fashionable and friendly person. In all of my images I asked Katie to look at the camera and smile as I wanted my magazine to have a warm and friendly atmosphere to it, getting Katie to look out to the camera helps to address the audience as she is making eye contact with the reader and making them feel involved.

I used Blogger to upload all of my work onto which helps to keep it all together and show the process of the research and making of my magazine.

I used In Design to create my Double page spread I found it hard to use this software as I have never used it before, but once I got used to it, it helped me to create a good and effective double page spread.
I used Pic Monkey to edit the images that I took for my music magazine as this is the software that I found easiest to use.
I used Photoshop to do some of my editing although I found this hard to use as it was my first time of using this software.

7: Looking Back At Your Preliminary Task (The School Magazine Task), What Do You Feel You Have Learnt In The Progression From It To Full Product

Since creating my college magazine I have gained more knowledge for using the different software’s. For Example I have learned how to edit my magazine effectively without over editing them. Also I have gained more knowledge about using blogger which has given me confidence to add more posts to my account. I have also learned how to make my magazine fit with regular conventions and also learned how to use new software’s such as InDesign and Photoshop although I am still not completely familiar with Photoshop. Looking at both of my magazines that I have created my music magazine looks a lot more professional as I didn’t really know how to use the software’s while creating my college magazine. My music magazine is much more professional; from the image to the overall layout, and from the use of consistent fonts and colours to small details such as bar code and competitions.

Questionnaire and Evaluation

                                           Music Magazine Questionnaire

1.    What type of things do you like to see in a music magazine?

2.    What would attract you to a music magazine?

3.    What colours would work well on a music magazine?

4.    What genre of music do you like?

5.    How often do you buy music magazines?

6.    What do you find most interesting in magazines?

7.    How much would you pay for a music magazine? £
8.    What would put you off buying a magazine?

                                                     Questionnaire Evaluation.
I have conducted a Questionnaire to find out what people think about music magazines and what sorts of things the would like so see. I handed out my questionnaire to 5 different people to make sure i had some good and constructive feedback.
From my questionnaires i found that people like to see interviews and gossip in a music magazine, as the people i asked to do the questionnaire was the similar age to the people i would like my magazine to appeal to, i will make sure i include interviews and gossip. From my questionnaire i also found that images and bold writing is what attracts people to look at magazines and the colours people suggested i use were red and black.
The genre i will use for my magazine will be pop/R&B as the majority of people who completed my questionnaire said that this is the style of music that they like to listen to.
I also asked people what things would put people off from buying a magazine , the feedback i got was high pricing and colours that dont go well together.
From my questionnaire i found that an appropriate price that people would pay for a magazine is £2 - £2.50

Explanation of how the results will affect my construction
My magazine genre will be pop/r&b as this is what the majority of people who completed my magazine said they like to listen to best. The image I will use on my front cover will be something that represents this drama or style as I want my magazine to link nicely together and adding an image to fit the genre will do this.
In my magazine I will try to include quite a few images as this is what people said will attract them to a magazine I will also make sure my mast head is big and bold as this is also what people said will attract them.
The colours I will try to include in my magazine will be red and black with maybe one other colour as from my questionnaire most people said that these colours would work well together and also go well on a music magazine, these colours also appeal to both genders, I will have to be careful of what other colour I will include as the feedback from my questionnaire said that if i included colours that didnt go well together would put them off buying a music magazine.
The price I will feature on the front of my magazine will be £2-50 as people who took part in my questionnaire said that this was a reasonable price that they would be willing to pay.

Music Magazine Double page spread Research

This double Page spread is eye catching and colourful. The thing that automatically catches my eye when I look at this double page spread is the image of Justin Bieber, this is because he has been placed in the centre of the double page spread and he is looking out towards the readers. The image is also eye catching as the image fills the whole of both pages and the writing is placed ontop of the image.
I can tell that this magazine is mainly aimed at girls as the page is mainly pink with a little white underneath the masthead to make it stand out as the writing is black and also pink. Pink makes me think it is aimed at girls as it is a very feminine colour, and the image of Justin also makes me think that it is aimed at girls as most of his fan base are girls and the masthead says "Crazy about Biebers Body" and girls would want to read about Justin and his body. The key words in the masthead are coloured in pink, "BIEBERS BODY" thes words are in pink and also bold as they are there to stand out as they summarise the whole of the article and girls would want to read on as soon as they see these words. There is a few smaller images on the double page spread, these are also there to attract and they are linked with the text, the writer has included a picture of Justin Bieber shirtless as they know that this image would attract the girls attention, this picture is also relevant to the text as the whole article talks about his body.
The text on this double page spread has been set out in boxes, each of the boxes talk about a different part of his body, this makes the magazine look alot more organised as it is easier to find key information and easier to pick which thing you would like to read about as each box has its own little heading. The boxes are in two different shades of pink which also looks more organised as the lighter shade of pink has been used to show where the quotes are. The quotes summarise each box incase people didnt want to read masses of writing.

This double page spread is eye catching as the images are of two members from one of the biggest boybands around right now, they catch my eye as they are both looking out to the audience and are standing casually and look unposed. They also catch my eye as they look as though they as though they dont belong and they look quite insecure, this may make people want to read on and find out why they are posed like this and why they have the facial expressions that they have. The Colour scheme of this double page spread fits with the mood of this story, the colours used are grey, white and blue these are quite dull colours which reflect a sad depressed mood, i know these colours have been used to link with the story as the quote in the top left says "i felt like i didnt fit in" which also seems like a down, depressing quote, the other quotes used also seem to fit in with this mood. The Editor has used these quotes as people look at those first to see if the story seems interesting and if the quotes are interesting then the readers will want to read on and find out more about the story. The text for this article has been set out into two columns, one for each member of the band, this makes the magazine look much more organised as its easy to see which column is talking about which band member, the magazine looks even more organized as each column has been split into small paragraphs which each have a little heading which says what the paragraph is about. The text helps the image to stand out more as the images have been text wrapped and do not go over the image which makes the image more clear to see, although a quote has been placed on each image we can still see the two images and we can still see who they both are.
This is a double page spread from a music magazine featuring pink. This is a typical double page spread as the image takes up one full page and the text fills up the other.
The image of pink is eye catching not only because it takes up the page but because she is looking out to the audience this may make the audience feel connected. Pink is also eye catching as she looks as though she is laughing, this may make the audience want to read on to find out why she is laughing and also find out why she looks so happy. The image of pink also stands out as the image is on a black background, and a black background is used to make images stand out. Pink has blonde hair which stands out more as the background is black, she also has bright coloured earings which are also eye catching on the black background.
The double page spread looks neat and organised, this is because the text has been arranged into 3 neat same sized columns, this makes it look more proffessional and easy to read, the editor has included a bit of text on top of the image, this bit of text may describe the image a little more which may give an insight into why pink looks so happy in this image. The text at the top of the page says "cash for questions" this may catch the readers eye as most people are interested in money, and they may want to find out more about what this means which may entice them to read the article to find out if there is more information about it.

Music Magazine Contents page research

The images on this contents page are quite big, this is good as it will help to attract the audience and may also make them want to read on, the images are also of a popular band, called oasis, which may also attract attention from people who may know who they are and also people who may like them and the kind of music they do.The contents page has been split into two sections which makes it look well ordered. This also makes it easy to navigate around the page and find the information they want to read about as the contents of the magazine has been listed, so people can see all of the top stories easier. The bottom half of the page has a heading and a bit of a story which has been put there to entice the audience to read on as it is continued inside the magazine. The Editor has also included the Logo in the top left of the page maybe to help it stick in peoples heads so that they remember this magazine , the editor has also included a sentence underneath all of the headings for the top stories, this is so that it catches attention. The sentences have been included to try and encourage people to read the rest of the magazine. The Text on the page stands out well as it is black writing on top of a white background, these are opposite colours and help each other to stand out well, the editor hasnt overloaded the page with colours and have kept it simple by using white, black and a little bit of red, this fits the house style, the white is the background, the black is used for the writing and the red has been used in the bottom right corner which shows a page number and a heading of a story, so that it is easier to find that story in particular. To fill out the page a little more so there isnt a big blank space, the editor has included a small advert which may also encourage people to read it as the advert says "suscribe today , save 33%" this is an enticement to encourage people to regularly buy this magazine and suggests if they do they will save money, this will grab attention as people like saving money.

This contents page is out of a well known magazine called Top of the Pops, the magazine seems to be aimed at girls as the strip at the top is pink,a feminine colour. The editor has included an image of a band that teenage girls love. The images on this contents page are quite small as there are alot of headings for the top stories and the images included are all girly and things that young girls would like, The headings for the top stories are also aimed at girls , i know this because one of them says "we love boys" this has been included as teenage girls tend to think about boys alot, so including this in the magazine will attract the audience that they wanted it to appeal to. The headings for the top stories have all been put in columns and are easy to see and to find, the headings also have page numbers next to them so you dont have to look all the way through the magazine to find the story , you can just go to the page that it gives you and find it much quicker. To make it look more interesting some numbers dont have headings next to them but instead have pictures, this is to make you think and wonder why these pictures are here which will make you want to go to the page it gives you and find out more, they could of also included thes images instead of headings maybe because teens dont like to read alot and like to see pictures too. The images make the contents page look a little more interesting and give a better insight into what the magazine has inside. The headings of the magazine have even been organised more as they have been split into groups with their own heading at the top which tells you stories that are to do with that certain heading, the big heading also links these stories together which makes the magazine look as though it is well organised and well written.

Music Magazine Research

The front cover of this Music magazine is bright and colourful which will draw the eyes of the audience in, bright colours have probably been used because the audience of this magazine is likely to be teenagers to young adults who like bright colours and not dull ones, so already this magazine will appeal to them. The colours used all go together nicely, the editor has used Blue, yellow and white with the word 'Swagger' in red, this word is a word that teenagers use alot which also suggests that the audience of this magazine is teenagers. The MastHead has been placed at the very top centre of the page so it is easier to spot and recognise the magazine, the Main sell lines are in yellow so that those are the ones we look at first as yellow is a bright colour, also the yellow sell lines are much bigger than the blue ones, this is probably because the yellow ones are linked with the main image, whereas the blue ones are about other stories that are not relevant to the main image but are inside the magazine.
The skyline may make people want to read on as it says "the truth about boybands" and the readers may want to know exactly what this means and why it says "the truth" , this makes it seem as though theres something the reader doesnt know, but if they read on they will find out.
The image that this music magazine has used is that of a well known singer and songwriter 'usher' who is popular with teenagers and young adults, he has been placed there to appeal to more young people who are maybe fans of his which will make them want to buy the magazine if they see him situated on the cover, although we cant see his eyes as he is wearing big sunglasses like most celebs do, he is looking out to the audience which may help to draw them in and entice them to read the magazine in more detail. The image is a close up of usher so we can automatically tell who he is, while looking towards the camera he has his finger sticking up with a ring on it, this may make the audience wonder why he is posed like this which may make them want to find the story inside the magazine and read more into it, usher also looks relaxed and he looks important with the sunglasses on his face, this may be because the sell line describes him as 'the king'. The image of Usher goes over the MastHead but although we cant see the whole word we can still tell that it says 'vibe' vibe is a well known magazine, the way that the editor has placed usher on top of the MastHead also suggests that the magazine is well known because if it was a new magazine they would want the audience to see the full name.
Incase the audience want to find out more about the magazine the editor has included the website of the magazine company in the bottom right, this is probably because it is the last thing that we look at on the front cover and it makes it accesseble to a lot more people as most people have the internet, on their phones and computers.
The Price and Barcode have also been included at the bottom but are very small which could mean that the magazine is expensive and wants the readers to see the sell lines first before they see the price so they get hooked on the sell lines and commit to buy.

The Front cover of this magazine is simple but effective as it only uses 3 colours, red, white and black, the writing and the Mast Head stand out as the background is black, The logo background is red and the Letter Q which is the logo of the magazine is white ontop of the red background which makes it look brighter and stand out more, The sell lines use the same colour as the logo which makes it look more coodinated and more recognisable as these are the main two colours used it also makes it look  more proffessional as it hasnt been overloaded with colours. The logo of the magazine is positioned in the top left of the cover as this is the first thing that the audience will look at.
The Image used on this magazine is of Cheryl Cole, she is well known so she will appeal to a wider audience, from teenage girls and boys, to young adults and maybe a few older guys who may be attracted to Cheryl, She stands out as the image looks quite dull but her lips are bright red which also go with the colour scheme of the logo and sell lines which make her stand out and brings the whole of the cover together. Cheryl is looking out towards the audience with her tongue on what looks like a spiky ring, this makes her look more fiesty and the way she is posed makes the audience wonder why she is posed like this which may encourage them to read more about the topic of Cheryl. The editor has also used Cheryl as she will also be the main feature of the magazine, this may encourage people to read on and find out why they have chosen her to be the feature.
The skyline at the top of the magazine says 'the UK's biggest music magazine' this gives the impression that the magazine is well known and trusted which may make the audience choose this one over others as the skyline seems so positive . It may also make the readers want to read on as the skyline says it is the biggest music magazine then it may entice people to read on as they would think the  magazine will be filled with much more articles and excitement as they have alot of readers.
The word 'rocks' suggests that the audience of this magazine is mostly aimed at people who like rock music as Q is mainly associated with rock although, Cheryl Cole has nothing to do with rock, this is probably to widen the target market and make it appeal to a bigger audience.

This magazine covers target market is teenage girls, this is obvious as the colour scheme is very feminine, the editor has used , pink and purple mainly but there is also a little bit of yellow to highlight a quote which is there to hook the readers attention.Because of the colour choice i can tell that the audience is teenage girls but it is more clear that this is the audience as the editor has included images of things that interest teenage girls, the image of justin bieber has been used as his fan base is mainly girls who are teens.
The main image of justin bieber is eye catching, the image is of justin bieber and he is looking out to the audience with a smile on his face, this makes the reader feel welcomed to the magazine as it gives it a warm feeling, Justin is also pointing outwards to the camera, this may make people want to read on to find out why he is posed this way and why he looks so happy. The other images used may also attract the reader as they are also famous and have teenage girls as the majority of their fan base, these images have been included to catch the eye of people who may like these people or the things that they do so that they want to read on. The editor has also included images of a show, a dress and what looks like an item of make-up , all of these things may interest teenage girls and make them want to buy the magazine and read it.
The sell lines also suggest that the target market for this magazine is teenager girls as they are all to do with topics that teenagers like for example one of them says "dying for a tan?" most people of any age want a tan so this may interest people of all ages, another sell line says "BOYS what they think about" this sell line may have been included as teenage girls tend to be at the stage where they think about boys more than many other things, this may make them want to read on and find out what this sell line is about. The editor has also included an advert which may interest girls and a competition sell line about meeting JLS.
The mast head of this magazine "Top Of The Pops" suggests that this magazine is quite well known as justins head is covering half of it, but although part of it is covered we can still tell what it says, and for the magazine to cover part of it shows that it may have been around for a while as they dont actually need to show the whole of the mast head. The BBC logo is also at the top of the magazine cover, this may make people want to buy it as they know that the bbc is a Worldwide trusted company so they magazine must also be trusted and filled with accurate information.

My College Magazine Evaluation and mock ups

Who would the audience be for your media product?
This is my front cover of my college magazine, the audience of the magazine is college students or people who may want to attend college this is why i included a picture of bramcote college itself as people who are looking to find a college can see what this particular one looks like and see what type of people go there.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?
My media product represents the social group that it is tageted at as on my front cover i have a picture of the college and two students who attend college, the college and the students are there to represent all students who attend the college as they both look happy to be there and ready to learn which may make people happy about choosing to go to bramcote college.

How did you attract/address your audience?
To attract the target audience i used a big bold red masthead this is because the main colour for bramcote college is red and the bold makes it stand out more and makes it visible for people to spot, i also made the image a lot brighter than it was so it creates a happy mood and makes the students seem brighter. the students also may attract the audience as they are both looking out towards the camera and looks like they are sharing eye contact with the audience which may make them feel part of the college already. In the bottom corner i have the word FREE printed in big bold white writing this is because if people know the magazine is free it may make them want to pick it up and read it as they dont have to spend anything to get it, the sell lines on the cover are all topics that teenagers may like or want to read about which also may attract the audience and make them want to read more of the magazine.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
My magazine will be published by IPC Media as it is the worlds leading magazine publishers and will be free to pick up in the college itself and also in local libraries and shops as teenagers go to shops alot so will be likely to see it there and also libraries could have the magazines on show to encourage young people to look at it and read about bramcote college and the things it has to offer.

What have you leant about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
In the process of making this college magazine i have learn how to make and edit my own cover of a college magazine, i learned how to edit the picture to uplift the mood and also play around with the font styles and colours to suit the audience of my magazine.
